Our Mission

IMG_3393_edited_edited.jpg
Created and run by Concordia University students, the Concordia Tennis Team is non-profit and serves to provide a structured environment for students to compete and play tennis.

The team selects new men & women players each year through tryouts, and only students who are full-time (12 credits) are eligible to join.

Since 2019-2020 season, our team became a member of the Concordia Student Union (CSU), giving us recognition from our University and some financial support. However, this financial support is not enough to cover all of the team's expenses, meaning players who join will pay a small fee and partake in fundraisers to cover the team budget.

The team competes in the Tennis Quebec University league, playing against 6 other schools: McGill University, University of Montreal, Université de Trois-Rivières, Université de Sherbrooke, Université de Laval, and ETS. Matches take place every weekend starting from January to April, with the top 4 teams in the league taking part in the Quebec playoffs in April. The winner is then invited to the Tennis Canada Nationals in August.

Tryouts

We select new players each year through tryouts in the Fall. Coaches and captains evaluate new players for 1 hour, before making a final decision based on technique, attitude and the fit on the team. The level of university tennis is competitive so players with more match experience and years of tennis have a higher chance of making the team.

Tryouts occur each year in September, the announcement of time & place will be made on all our platforms.

Supported by the Concordia Student Union, our team follows the CSU guidelines and rules. Each year, a team president and vice president are appointed to manage the team budget, sign the team constitution, and work with CSU.

Our hope is to continue working with CSU to reach out to more students, get more financial help, and keep a safe and structured environment for the team.

Frequently asked questions

1. How do I join the Concordia Tennis Team?

Follow Instagram or Facebook to stay informed on tryouts information and sign up to tryouts to try to make the team. Never hesitate to email us at concordiatennisteam@gmail.com or message us on social media directly if you are interested.

2. What can I do if I don't make the team?

We encourage players who don't make the team to keep training and playing tennis year round. Injuries can happen and it is possible for us to reach out mid-season to bring in someone new. You can also join the Concordia University Tennis Club (CUTC) which is open to all. You can email them at concordiatennisclub@gmail.com or reach out on their facebook page.

3. Do I have to pay fees?

Being a student run team, there is a team fee for each player. We have been able to cut fees tremendously over the years due to financial support, fundraising and cutting certain costs such as coaching fees (our coaches volunteer their time for free).

4. Do I have to pay for tryouts?

Yes, you cannot come to tryouts without booking your spot and paying the fee. We have to cover the cost of booking enough courts for everyone, and the fee is never more than what you would pay for 1 hour of tennis.

5. Is being on the team a big time commitment?

Our team trains twice a week (usually on weeknights) and has matches on weekends in the Winter. Matches can take up an entire day especially when we are traveling to Quebec City or Sherbrooke. We expect the selected players to attend trainings and matches

6. Are we part of the Concordia Stingers?

No we are not part of the Concordia Stingers. We came to an agreement with the school to continue being self-run while getting support from CSU. But we still compete as a varsity team under the Tennis Quebec University league.

7. What is the level on the team?

There are usually 12 men and 12 women that make the team each year. The level of tennis is competitive, most players have played tennis since a young age and competed in high school.

8. how do matches work?

Teams form a lineup of their 6 strongest players and face off with 6 singles matches and 3 doubles. Players can play both singles and doubles; singles are played 2 out of 3 no-ad sets, while doubles are one set to 8 games with ads. Each singles match is worth one point for the team while winning 2 out of 3 doubles guarantees another point. The team to win 4 out of 7 possible points wins the tie.

9. Where do we train and play matches?

Our team usually trains at the National Tennis Center which is the IGA stadium in Parc Jarry, Montreal. It is accessible by metro or bus.  Most of our matches are there too, although we sometimes play in other Montreal tennis clubs, and travel to Quebec City to face Laval & travel to Sherbrooke to face theVert & Or. We encourage you to come watch us play even if you don't make the team!!!!
